The best tradition goes on........

A Bolga Basket is a work of art, and the people of the Upper East region in Ghana are masters in making it. We know straw and dyes, and we know quality. Havilak’s unique and contemporary designs, created by Pernille Bulow, make us different from other producers of Bolga Baskets, and our commitment to fair trade ensures you that we are working towards improving the lives of our producers.
Every one of our baskets has a personal touch. No two baskets are the same, nor are the weaving groups which make them, and at different areas in Bolga they use different techniques. However, the most important defining factor for your basket is the individual weaver. The weavers are at the core of our company. They are widows, single mothers and other women struggling to make ends meet in the poorest region of Ghana. They want to give their children the education and possibilities that they themselves never got.
These aspirations are achievable only through fair trade systems, which Havilak with support from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), has embarked upon. It is also a guarantee for environmental preservation, through the use of recyclable, earth-friendly materials.
Mission
Our mission is to produce high quality original African straw baskets - popularly known as “Bolga Baskets” - based on the principles of fair trade, using capacity building and marketing to achieve sustainable livelihood for marginalized weavers.
Vision
Our vision is to create sustainable employment and economic empowerment for the weavers.
